an exciting time to be a southsider!

our friends over at tramway are hosting an exhibition showcasing all nominees for arguably the most prestigious contemporary art award – the turner prize 2015. as southsiders, we are so unbelievably lucky to have this fantastic creative space right on our doorstep (a ten minute, half a mile walk to be precise!). this is the very first time the turner prize has been held in scotland – a very exciting time for our ever expanding art community.    the 2015 turner prize is being held from 1 october to 17 january 2016, with the winner being announced on 7 december 2015.  the nominees for this year are:  assemble bonnie camplin janice kerbel nicole wermers “given how many artists from glasgow have made up the turner prize shortlists over recent years, it is great to have the prize on show in tramway, which feels like a natural home for the prize this year.” > dr penelope curtis, director, tate britain   in addition to the turner prize exhibition, tramway are also offering many other exciting activities for visitors. so, if you’re looking for creative inspiration check out their workshops, talks and tours!    “over the last 20 years, glasgow and scotland has gained national and international recognition as a centre of excellence in, and for, the visual arts and for many years artists who are from scotland or who have trained at the glasgow school of art – one of the world’s leading art schools – have been nominated for, or won, the award.” > nicholas serota, director, tate   come and share your thoughts and turner prize experiences with us – we’d love to hear. what a great exhibition to have in the heart of our...

world’s biggest coffee morning

in case you haven’t heard, the world’s biggest coffee morning is happening THIS FRIDAY! help macmillan support people affected by cancer and join us on friday 25 september for delicious cakes and coffee.    every cake shared helps to support people affected by cancer.  £27 could pay for a macmillan nurse to spend an hour with someone who has just been told they have cancer.  £62 could help someone with cancer claim the benefits they are entitled to.  £175 could enable a person living with cancer to heat their home when they really need to.  together we can make sure that no one faces cancer alone. so go on… have another slice.  if you can’t make it along to the bungo on friday but would still like to contribute to this fantastic cause then simply text CUPCAKE to 70550 (one text=£5), go to macmillan.org.uk/coffee or phone 0845 074 2606.   texts cost £5 plus network charge. macmillan will receive 95p of every £1 donated in this way. don’t forget to obtain the bill payers permission...

sangs an’ clatter is the village storytelling centre’s regular storytelling night, featuring top storytellers and performers from around scotland and beyond.  on thursday 27 august, in the bungo-lo, we are joined by guests ruth kirkpatrick, naomi o’kelly and daniel serridge. with their repertoire of scottish traveller-inspired stories, live music and cheeky tales, topped off with a dose of the usual tomfoolery and wordplay, this month’s show is not to be missed! here’s a little background to each of the acts: ruth kirkpatrick – ruth likes to tell all kinds of stories, scottish and international, to all kinds of audiences, young and old. with a passion for tales from the scottish traveller tradition which was nurtured by her early mentor, master storyteller stanley robertson. like him she hails from the north east and at times uses her ‘mither tongue’ doric. her love of scottish ballads and humorous songs also inspired her to work with the great ballad singer sheila stewart. naomi o’kelly – naomi’s repertoire of cheeky tales are told with wit, energy and enthusiasm. offering a variety of stories from around the world, she’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face. daniel serridge – amiable host and storytelling fool daniel, will keep the evening ticking over with his brand of tomfoolery and word play. don’t miss out, buy your tickets here! just £4 per ticket if bought in advance or £5 on the door. ...
